On His Birthday: Feisty’s Remarkable Journey from Abandonment to Love
From Desperation to Hope
In mid-September, a heart-wrenching scene unfolded on a busy street in Brooklyn. A dog, later named Feisty, was found collapsed on the sidewalk, her frail body almost lifeless. Passersby initially believed she was dead. She was emaciated, barely moving, and her condition was so dire that many feared the worst. Yet, despite her seemingly hopeless state, Feisty was still clinging to life.
A Race Against Time
Feisty’s plight quickly caught the attention of Second Chance Rescue through the efforts of concerned bystanders who shared her story. With the help of a Good Samaritan, Feisty was rushed to an emergency hospital. There, she was immediately started on a regimen of antibiotics, fluids, and pain medication. Her condition was critical, and rescuers were uncertain if she would survive the ordeal.
“She was in terrible condition: sickly, dehydrated, and malnourished with clumps of hair missing,” Rachel Larkin, director of social media for Second Chance Rescue, told The Dodo. “She was covered in urine and fleas, and her nails were so overgrown they were embedded into her paw pads. But the biggest concern was the masses on her body and whether they were cancerous or benign.”
An Unwavering Spirit
Despite her immense pain, Feisty’s gentle and loving nature shone through from the moment she was rescued. All she wanted was to be loved and to show gratitude to those around her for the kindness they had shown. “Feisty was pure love from the moment she was found laid out on that sidewalk,” Larkin said. “When our volunteers went to visit her the morning after she arrived at the hospital, she greeted them with gentle kisses and a happy, albeit hairless, tail that wouldn’t quit wagging.”
A Turn for the Better
Given her suspected cancer diagnosis, Feisty was placed with a foster family as a fospice dog, a designation for animals receiving palliative care. Her new family quickly fell in love with her, cherishing every moment they had with her. Then came the miraculous news: Feisty’s biopsy results revealed that the masses were benign. She did not have cancer after all.
“When we got the news that Feisty’s biopsy results came back as benign and noncancerous, Feisty was no longer considered hospice,” Larkin said. “By the next morning, Feisty’s fospice parents had requested adoption papers. They knew she was already home.”
A Celebration of Life
Today, as we celebrate Feisty’s birthday, we honor not just the day of her birth but her incredible journey from the brink of death to a life filled with love and care. Feisty has gone from being abandoned and unloved on the streets to having a family that adores her. Her transformation is a testament to the power of compassion and the resilience of the animal spirit.
Feisty’s story reminds us all of the importance of kindness and the profound impact it can have on the lives of those in need. As she enjoys her special day, surrounded by the love of her forever family, we celebrate the joy and hope that she embodies.
