JP’s Birthday Wish: Finding a Forever Home After 1,700 Days at the Shelter

For over 1,700 days, JP, a senior dog with a heart full of love, has been waiting for a family to call his own. Once a happy, social pup living his best life, JP’s world changed in 2019 when his owner was deployed into military service. Left in the care of Bideawee Animal Shelter, JP has remained there ever since.

When JP first arrived at the shelter, he was full of life and loved everyone he met. But after five long years, the shelter environment has taken its toll. He’s become a bit more reserved with strangers, a common response to the instability of shelter life. Despite this, JP adores his Bideawee caretakers and has a special bond with them.

“When he’s around people he knows and trusts, he’s the same affectionate dog he was when he arrived,” said Melissa Treuman, senior director of development and communication at Bideawee. “He loves to cuddle, get belly rubs, and enjoy treats. He’s a staff and volunteer favorite who still has so much love to give.”

JP’s long stay has made him more cautious, but those who know him well cherish his gentle nature. One devoted volunteer visits him every day during her lunch break—a testament to JP’s sweet personality and the strong bond he’s built with those who care for him.

The challenge JP faces is not uncommon for large dogs. Data from Hill’s Pet Nutrition’s State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report highlights that while many people express interest in adopting from shelters, only a small percentage are willing to adopt larger dogs. This has resulted in longer stays for dogs like JP.

Despite the odds, JP hasn’t lost hope. To help him find his forever home, his adoption fee has been generously covered by a fan, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition will provide his new family with a year’s worth of Science Diet Senior Vitality dog food. Additionally, the new adopters will receive a four-week training package from GoodPup.

JP dreams of a quiet home where he can enjoy his golden years, preferably with no young children or other pets. He has so much love to offer and is ready to shower his new family with affection.
