When authorities visited Ledell Walker’s home, they found a heartbreaking sight: Drew, a 4-year-old pit bull, was so emaciated and weak that he could barely walk or lift his head. Walker, 57, had neglected Drew to the point where the dog was forced to eat trash and towels to survive. The ASPCA intervened just in time, with Drew nearly dead upon arrival at the Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in Manhattan.

ASPCA spokesman Joseph Pentangelo described Drew’s condition as dire, citing a combination of starvation and medical neglect. Drew was anemic, severely underweight, and suffering from an untreated intestinal blockage. Surgeons worked tirelessly to remove trash, chewed pieces of plastic, and a towel from Drew’s stomach, revealing the desperate lengths the poor dog had gone to in search of food.

Walker was subsequently arrested and charged with animal cruelty, adding to his history of legal troubles, which included recent arrests for grand larceny and past charges of robbery. His arrest marked the 17th case of animal cruelty in New York City that year and the fifth in Brooklyn.

Despite his traumatic past, Drew’s story took a turn for the better. The dedicated veterinary team at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital provided him with the urgent medical care he needed, and their efforts paid off. Drew began to regain his strength and health, showing remarkable resilience and a will to survive.
